Solid Sodium Silicate
is an amorphous glass obtained through a process of direct fusion using silica sand and sodium carbonate, although it can also be made from silica sand, carbon and sodium sulfate.
In the former manufacturing process, the relative proportion of sand to carbonate supplies a wide range of SiO
2
:Na
2
O ratios.
